BFF sessions {a call for models}

From your side of the firewall, it might look like things have been pretty quiet here at vividity. Well…. I must admit, I have been enjoying a slightly slower pace in my ‘baby’ boy’s last year before school. It hasn’t all been paper aeroplanes and lego, though! I’ve been beavering away on behind the scenes kind of stuff, getting ready for things to take off in my Sydney-based portrait photography business once my boy is settled into school next year.

One thing I have done is revamp my product range. I’ve improved and simplified, making things much better, tighter, more cohesive. One new “product” I’m considering is a “bestie session”, and I’d love some feedback on it. To that end, I’m calling for models. Here’s what I’ve got in mind:

BFF Session:

  • up to 4 friends for a photo session where we would get group photos and individual portraits
  • 20 gift prints to share between you
  • 8 mini concertina albums (all the same design). That’s two for each of you, one to keep and one to give away to your grandparents, your boy/girlfriend, your mum…. whoever you like, really.
  • 20% off any additional purchases.

That’s over $1800 value, but I would only charge $1000…. so across four of you, that’s only $250 each! And for the first group of BFFs to book in, I’ll do it for half that again ($500), only $125 each assuming there are four of you. Now there’s a bargain!

It’s first come first served, so phone your friends, and then one of you phone me lickety-split to organise your session. (Click “contact me” at the top of the blog for my phone number.)

These sessions suit BFFs of any age. You might be as young and gorgeous as these guys:

Or as grown up and beautiful as these:

Or you might be in your retirement!

And…. a little treat for those of you who have read this far…. I’ll let you in on why I think a bestie session is a good idea: Here’s one of the best photos I have of me and my three best friends together. I’m the one second from the left, with baby number two almost ready to be born.

Not the best image, is it? Wish I could do it over with a professional!

Oops!

Many of you will know that I am running a little Facebook competition. Well, I’ve just learned that what I’m doing is actually against the rules. You can’t  run a competition on Facebook where people are entered into a prize drawer just for liking your page, because it means that all the people who liked your page before the competition are being entered into a raffle without their consent. Fair enough, I suppose. So, long story short, I’ll have to change how the competition is run.

It will still be linked to people liking my facebook page, but you will  have to leave a comment here on the blog to enter the competition. So far I’ve announce first, second and third prizes:

THIRD PRIZE: Three people will win a gift pack of 10 of my luxurious hand-made greeting cards. Each pack valued at at $49.50.

SECOND PRIZE: Two people will win $250.00 credit towards their print and product purchases when they have a portrait session with vividity.

FIRST PRIZE: One lucky person will win a free mini concertina album and $500.00 credit towards their print and product purchases when they have a portrait session with vividity.

GRAND PRIZE: Will be announced when I have 100 ‘likers’ on my vividity photography by Jennifer Taylor Facebook page.

BUT WAIT! Don’t go leaving comments here yet. Well, actually, it would be GREAT if you were to leave me a little love in the comments section. Go on. You know you want to. Just say “hi!”. It won’t hurt. Not one little bit.

But it won’t get you entered into the competition, either.

The competition will open up to entries once I have hit 100 likes, so keep an eye on this space.

Actually, go check out facebook, make sure you like my page there, tell all your friends about it and suggest they like it, too. And THEN watch this space.

Oh, and for those of you who are not able to come to Sydney for a shoot with me, or who are photographers yourselves, I’ll run a separate competition over on my Pompalary Blog where you can win a hand knitted or crocheted hat or scarf of your choice from my range of designs. Great for yourself, your kids, or to add to your collection of cute photo props!

And here’s a little bunch of flowers, just for you:

Oh, and please note that by entering the competition you are:

1. providing any and all information included in your entry to vividity/Jennifer Taylor, and not to Facebook,

2. acknowledging that the competition is being run by vividity/Jennifer Taylor, and not Facebook, and

3. releasing Facebook of any liability whatsoever in relation to the competition.

Trick or treat?

I’m not a party pooper. Really I’m not. I just don’t get all the fuss, that’s all. I have avoided the all the Halloween stuff for as long as I could.  It’s not something that was ever a part of our family tradition when I was a kid, nor did it feature in the lives of anyone else I knew. It seems only in the last 10 years or so that Halloween has become a bit of a ‘thing’ in Australia…. and I’m convinced it is only because store owners have decided it’s a bit of a money spinner.

And does anyone really know what it’s all about anyway? I’m sure none of the local kids that come a-knocking on my door have a clue what Halloween is about. For them it’s just a great excuse to get dressed up and scam some sweet treats out of the neighbours. It used to really annoy me. In fact, one year I asked every child who came to the door if they could explain the origins of Halloween. Not one of them could. I gave them each a treat, told them to go home and google Halloween, and said I’d give them 5 bucks if they came back the next day and explained the origins of the celebration. No one came back. But I’m not a party pooper. Really, I’m not.

It’s a wonder my house wasn’t egged.

Anyway, my kids have finally worn me down. They went trick or treating for the first time last year (just to about three houses, all people we know and all set up in advance). They had a lot of fun. And yes, they know what Halloween’s all about (well at least the older one does, the three-year-old is probably a bit young to get it just yet). And this year, I’ve decided if I can’t beat ’em, then I’ll join ’em…. and I made it really worthwhile to come a-knocking on my door. You see, with each treat, I also handed out a greeting card, each with a unique number. And now I’m going to draw one of those numbers at random, to see who has won a free photo shoot and a $100 credit towards their print purchase. Wow! Now that’s a treat!

So…. [IMAGINE DRUM ROLL HERE]…

Number 18! Congratulations! If you hold the card with that number, please contact me asap so I can send you a proper gift voucher for your session. There’s a contact page on this blog, or you can visit my website and contact me via there. (You’ll have to show me your card so that I can verify you actually have number 18.)

Oh, how I hate to disappoint the rest of you!…. so here’s what I’ll do: If you contact me, I’ll send you a voucher for a free mini concertina album (they’re really cute!) and $50 credit towards print purchases from your next session with vividity. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon! (Again, you’ll have to show me your card as proof that you are part of the trick-or-treat draw.)

Oh, and if you’re interested, here’s a link to a site that explains the origins of Halloween.

PS: I was going to publish this post tomorrow, 1st November, but I have since joined the communication shutdown, which means I will be ‘off-line’ tomorrow. So, I brought this forward to tonight. It might turn up on some of my facebook pages tomorrow, but it won’t actually be me putting it there. I’ve set things up so it just automatically posts to facebook from here, but for some reason it doesn’t always turn up at a predictable time. Don’t know why. Maybe the internet fairies have work to rule days from time to time.

Oh, and that reminds me: Join me on facebook! There’s a link over on the right of your screen. It’s at the bottom. You might have to scroll down a bit.  It’s worth becoming a fan (i.e. ‘like’ vividity photography by Jennifer Taylor), because not only do you get to keep up with all the news, but also from time to time I will run facebook only specials and giveaways. So go on. Click that button, and I’ll see you over there!

Brown-eyed bundles of cuteness {vividity, Sydney child photographer}

When I launched my website (www.vividity.com.au) I ran a little competition to celebrate. Here, at last! is the family that won first prize:

Aren’t they a good looking bunch? The oldest boy is in my daughter’s class at school, so I’ve known the family for a couple of years now… and for a couple of years I’ve been seeing these gorgeous brown-eyed, curly-haired kids every morning and every afternoon, thinking “Oooooh…. I want to do a shoot with you!” So, you can imagine my excitement when Mr Random Number Generator (www.random.org) selected them as winners of the first prize!

We did the shoot a few weeks back now, but with school holidays I didn’t get a chance to any editing. So… finally…. here they are!

Here are the girls (another collage…and another challenge!)

Hi again,

The I ♥ faces collage challenge has inspired me to post this sneak peek a little differently to how I usually do. Instead of just dropping in a series of images, I have created a little collage. I hope you like it, S!

And so what’s the other challenge? These guys were! After struggling for a while to get these two in the same place at the same time, their mum told me that I was the third photographer to have trouble getting images of these girls together. That made me feel a bit better.  I thought I had just completely lost my ability to work with kids!

Another local photographer, Kris McCann, took some fabulous images of the whole family not that long ago. She did a GREAT job!…but again, not many of just the girls together.  So when their mother booked in for one of my special fund raiser shoots,* she said the focus was on getting one good shot of the girls together. The shot of the girls together in the collage below is just one of several that we got that day. It was getting late in the day, though (almost midday… what a ghastly time to shoot!) so the light’s not great. Maybe photographer number four will have more luck!

And the trick to get them together? A sky writer! Fortunately, just as we were about to give up for the day, a plane flew over and started writing Easter messages in the sky. Thank God for Easter!

* I have a fund raiser running at the moment, where you get $185 worth of photography services and products for a sitting fee of just $50, which I will then donate to Kids like Brett, a charity that buys medical equipment to care for some seriously sick kids. There are only a few slots left, and the offer closes at the end of June 2010. You can check out the details here.

Is a picture worth a thousand words? Or some cold hard cash?

About a year and a half ago I was sleeping every night with my mobile phone switched on and beside my bed. My camera packed and ready to go. Phone and camera were my constant companions. Why? I was expecting a phone call. A most important call. A dear friend of mine was pregnant with her second baby and said she would call me to take photos as soon as the baby arrived.

That call never came, thank God.

A year and a half ago her baby might not have survived, as he would have been very premature. Conceiving this baby was very nearly impossible*, and staying pregnant involved months of bed rest (not as much fun as it sounds!), much of it in hospital.

As it turned out, he was born prematurely, but gladly his arrival was not as early as we all thought it might be. With expert help from the doctors and nurses at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, and a lot of patient love and care from his parents, he survived. You might remember him from and earlier post:

Well… that baby has just turned ONE! And to celebrate his first year of life, his mum and I are running a little fundraiser to buy much needed equipment for Royal North Shore Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and other similar places. Here’s how it works:

The first ten people to book in for a portrait session with me between 1st March and 30th June 2010 will receive:

  • half price sitting (only $50)
  • a free mini concertina album with 8 of your favourite images from the shoot
  • a free 5 x 7 inch print

That’s $185 value for just $50!

I will donate ALL of your sitting fee and 5% of what you order at your initial proofing session to Kids like Brett.

Who’s that?

Kids like Brett. They are a registered charity who donate 100% of all the money that passes through their books to purchase life-saving medical equipment for sick kids. They buy EXACTLY what the hospitals need to do their work, and they negotiate the best prices they can on some very specialised equipment.

Oh, and those of you who have received a half-price voucher for becoming fans of vividity on facebook can take part in this, too.

So book in for a photo session now, and turn your pictures into some cold hard cash for some very sick kids.
